Mobile Technology:
How Web Solutions are changing the Length of the Business Day
There's a lot to be said for mobile technologies and how they keep us connected to friends, family, and business associates. Web applications have allowed a computer to call a cell phone that updates a website that sends an RSS feed to hundreds of people, who start the process over again. This web of interconnectivity and twenty-four hour accessibility are changing the amount of hours that the business workday consists of. While there will always be people who work harder and longer than others mobile technology has made this easier then ever.
The variety of tasks that can now be performed while out of the office is astounding. You can work from home in your pajamas and come across as professional. E-business a term coined by IBM can be defined as the utilization of communication technologies to run all aspects of business. Customer portals, shared databases, conference calling are all part of e-Business.
There will always be people that take their work home with them; however mobile technology is making the business day longer, even for those who want to leave work when they, well, leave work. When clients/bosses/employees have access to cell phone numbers calls can come in at anytime of the day or night. Furthermore, more many people, email checking has become a borderline obsession/compulsion. According to a study by Gartner Inc., 42 percent of corporate email users check their business email while they are on vacation because web solutions make on-demand access possible with an internet connection. For some the days of a true holiday have ended.
Mobile technology has made business logistics faster, easier, and cheaper. Yet, it is creating a culture in which a day away from e-mail can feel uncomfortable.
